When the puck hits the ice at on March 27, something special will happen.

Current medicals students will skate out to face their future colleagues — physicians from across Calgary —&˛Ô˛ú˛ő±č;in a friendly hockey game with one shared mission: to raise $150,000 to support sarcoma research and improve patient care.

This year’s fundraiser will raise funds for the Integrated (iSARP) at the University of Calgary, with the support of the Cameron C. Daye & Catherine M. Pearson Sarcoma Endowment and the .

Embracing the power of sport

“Cancer has touched so many of our lives, which is why this initiative means so much to our team," says , BHSc'23, MSc'25, Stick it to Cancer co-chair. "For us, embracing the power of sport to raise funds for cancer is exceptionally powerful and hockey, especially in Canada, brings so many people together! We want this event to bring together our community to directly support research, care and resources that patients rely on.”

Led by , BSc’02, MD’05, MSc’09, PGME’11, and , MD’15, MSc’19, PGME’21, iSARP is transforming how Albertans diagnosed with sarcoma receive care. Their vision is a patient-centred precision oncology program that unites experts including surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, data scientists, rehabilitation specialists, and basic scientists to advance both the science and delivery of sarcoma treatment.

“Fundraising and funds from events like the Stick it to Cancer fundraiser really help grow a program with momentum, capacity and capability that allows us to attract more experts, more infrastructure, more technology. And the more we add, the more we move towards clinical impact,” says Monument.

Sarcoma research remains significantly underfunded, in part because of the disease’s rarity and complexity. There are more than 50 known subtypes, making it challenging to study and treat, so iSARP works to address this deficit by combining world-class clinical expertise with a commitment to research innovation that aims to improve outcomes and expands future treatment options for patients.

A bold new fundraising goal

Last year, Stick it to Cancer raised $131,616. This year, the teams will push even harder with a bold new goal of raising $150,000.

Stick it to Cancer takes place at WinSport on March 27 at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to join a community rallying together for the future of sarcoma research at UCalgary.

The money paid for will be donated and matched dollar-for-dollar by the Cameron C. Daye & Catherine M. Pearson Sarcoma Endowment and Alberta Cancer Foundation.
