When is a MOOC not a MOOC?

When it鈥檚 a MINI MOOC

Because MOOC stands for 鈥淢assive Open Online Course鈥, giving it the preface 鈥渕ini鈥 doesn鈥檛 make sense, at first.

But when Michele Jacobsen explains the concept behind a new course,  Quality Graduate Supervision miniMOOC, offered at the University of Calgary, it soon becomes clear that the moniker is a fit in this case.

Jacobsen, professor and associate dean of Graduate Programs in Education in the Werklund School of Education, worked with doctoral student Hawazen Alharbi, doctoral student in Learning Sciences, to develop an online course for graduate supervisors at UCalgary.

In the first iteration of the mini-MOOC (鈥渕ini鈥 because it is a closed pilot program), 25 academics took part. As this inaugural program finishes up, Jacobsen reflects on the success of this initiative and what future programs might look like.
