Presidential search progress update September 2018
To the University of Calgary community:
The beginning of a new academic year always brings a feeling of exciting possibilities ahead. This year, September at UCalgary also marks an important milestone in our presidential recruitment process and the work being done by the (PSC) to attract high-calibre candidates for consideration as the university鈥檚 next president and vice-chancellor.
The PSC began its work in March following Dr. Elizabeth Cannon鈥檚 announcement in February that she would be moving on from her role as UCalgary鈥檚 president and vice-chancellor at the end of 2018. A position profile was developed after consultation with members of the university community, a nomination process was opened to community members and the public as part of a dedicated , and the position was advertised online and in leading publications. The opportunity posting closed on July 31 and we are now reviewing short-listed candidates.
The PSC is pleased with the quality and breadth of candidates who responded to the UCalgary opportunity. Short-listed candidates are being interviewed in accordance with the committee鈥檚 terms of reference. This phase of the recruitment process will remain confidential. We will not be announcing candidate names and PSC members are required to maintain full confidentiality at all times.
As I have shared with you in previous updates, the presidential recruitment process is on schedule and progressing well. I hope to announce the results of our search process sometime in November. Should our final candidate not be available to take up the position immediately in January 2019, please note that the presidential search and appointment policy does makes provision for the appointment of an interim president.
The coming months will be a special time to celebrate the tremendous legacy that Dr. Cannon is leaving us and to prepare robust transition plans that will ensure the new president and vice-chancellor is well supported to continue our momentum. To this end, we have recently activated two committees that are busy advancing all components involved in a successful transition.
As we progress, I will continue to provide updates at key milestones of the search via UToday and on the presidential search website.
